When I subscribed to and started reading Exile on Newbury in Nov-Dec 2022, the pitches in my inbox all related to non-music topics. Returning to reading after a couple month hiatus of busy work time, I see pitches related to 100 best albums of all time, with archives that date back months and months. I thoroughly approve and share some musical taste, but (1) in what dream state did I miss all those music posts when I first started reading?, and (2) will you continue to pitch on other topics? I don’t see any of those non-music in the “About” summary of archives in the Substack.
Hi Ken, thanks for the note. We started Exile on Newbury St. back in October of 2020 at the height of the pandemic. Our premise was simple: Four friends with very different musical tastes would take turns pitching their favorite albums to the other three. If you could convince the group that your album was musically, culturally or artistically worthy (regardless of how each person felt about the genre), it was admitted into our imaginary Hall of Fame on Newbury St. We called the project Exile on Newbury St. as an homage to the great Rolling Stones album, which we deemed the nexus of our four divergent tastes. After two years and 99 albums, we wrapped it up this fall with Exile, our 100th and final entry in the series. In an effort to keep things going, we came up with the idea of pitching hot takes that were often absurd, but always had a grain of truth to them. We did this for a few months (during which you signed on) and then decided to abandon the weekly entry and leave things more open-ended for anyone who wanted to jump in with a pitch. And that's where we are right now. Feel free to peruse the music archives. I think you'll find some interesting reading and surprising results in there. Thanks for joining us!
