I think CJ will have more success with an album from the NWOBHM, specifically Iron Maiden. Something like Seventh Son of a Seventh Son (one of my favorites) has all the melody that Mitch and Ken are wanting and missing.
I saw the Seventh Son Tour at Wembley when I was studying in London my senior year of college. Great show! (Anthrax opened) I did manage to sneak Judas Priest into EONS, but I think Maiden may be a bridge too far. Even some of those later albums
That must have been amazing. Seventh Son was the first album I listened to by IM, and even though Number of the Beast is my favorite, 7th still has a special place. I've always thought it was incredibly melodic and much softer than some of their other albums; in some ways I think it would be easier for the other two EONS ambassadors to swallow than any Metallica.
BTW, I had saved up Metallica and Flying Burrito Brothers, so I read those entries back to back. As much as I love metal (and I do), I adore Gram Parsons. It was gutting to hear you rip Gilded Palace of Sin apart. For me, that album (and those artists, GP most of all) are as important as Steve Harris, Bruce Dickinson, and the rest of the boys.
You gotta follow your conscience, but I believe there's room for both in a sonic castle of mayhem and joy.
Yeah, I never really believed Metallica had a shot. But I had to get it on the record. And Ride the Lightning was just so revelatory, coming as it did at the height of the hair metal era. As for Maiden, I have to be honest and tell you I (mostly) prefer the Paul Di'anno albums (IM and Killers). Bruce is great, but those first two albums fused punk and metal so beautifully that I just can't get away from them.
I also enjoy Gram Parsons a great deal, especially his work with Emmylou Harris. I just didn't care for this album. It's funny, though. Based on the feedback, the people who love this album REALLY love it. And everybody else is just kind of indifferent. There doesn't seem to be any in between.
best burn of the entire EONS series: "...Given the choice between listening to 'Ride the Lightning' again and actually riding the lightning, I’d choose the chair every time."
That was harsh. Made for fun reading.

Has there ever been such visceral negative reactions to an EONS nominee?
To Mitch’s point, I’d contend that “Ride The Lightning” is peak Metallica-specifically “Trapped Under Ice.”
Outside of a few exceptions, everything that came after was bloated and overwrought.
