A long time ago I read an interview with the members of Cake. In it, one of them listed being able to live on something like 4500/mo. as his hidden talent. I don't know if he was joking or serious, but all these years later, if you mention Cake, it's the first thing I think of, not their music.

To be fair, they certainly created memorable music. I just don't know if it holds up that well. It seems like more of a novelty than anything else. And by that I mean in the "Perfect Strangers" sense- cool for the time when it came out, but not something I'd find myself putting on heavy rotation years later.

I dunno; maybe they're still big on Mypos, but for me, Cake just doesn't go the distance...

I think that's a fair assessment of your own experience of the band. The only thing I take issue with, as I did with Mitch and Ken, was labeling Cake a novelty act. Sure they were off-beat and quirky, but it's not like they were touring with Weird Al. Just because their music had a sense humor doesn't mean they weren't serious about it.

Maybe novelty is a poor term here; for me the music just isn't evergreen so much as it seems stuck in the time when it came out. Kinda like 311.

*That should say $500/mo....

Great call CJ! Any time is the perfect time for a slice of Cake! I love this band on many levels, and I'm willing to look past a few duds on this debut -- like picking walnuts out of the frosting -- because its flavor is so much richer, deeper, and more distinctive than everything else on the dessert cart. They have an energy and authenticity the music scene hasn't seen in decades, with an original audio and visual signature. It might be an acquired taste, for me it's become a savory one I can't get enough of!

Excellent food analogies, by the way

Agreed. I hadn't listened to this album all the way through in a while and I was surprised how even the lesser known songs came back to me immediately

I love both Cake (the band) and this album! There are so many layers to every song and it is cool that you can hear each instrument individually or part of the overall song. Too often than not multi-instrument bands come at you with just a full blast mashed up song rather than the nuanced layers that Cake delivers! Great pick by CJ!

I see what you did with cake and layers there, Neil

Not being familiar with this band, I have now listened to this album 3 times. I listen to most music these days from Spotify and noticed millions of people have played their music. I actually had great expectations that it would be some new quality music, just like when I discovered nuggets from Blurred Vision last week while on a long drive. Alas, it was not to be. I will now have to go listen to some Rolling Stones material at high volume just to get my musical compass straightened out. Thank you, CJ; thank you, Ken. No cake for Mitch.
